A key task for the planning was to design the outdoor areas of the neighborhood as an attractive space for all age groups, where the open space transforms into a retreat for relaxation and play in the greenery directly in front of your home.

A key requirement of the client was to keep maintenance costs for the outdoor areas as low as possible and to select plants that would thrive in Cologne’s hot summers.

The outdoor areas are designed with ample space for communal use and are divided into distinct zones: the playground offers inclusive play for children of different ages, a wide lawn invites for picnics, and a large pergola with numerous benches turns into a favorite meeting place for chatting and relaxing.

The planting has been specially selected for the changing climate factors and includes climate-resilient trees, drought-resistant perennial beds, and evergreen ground cover. The private gardens have direct access to the inner courtyard, and low hedges provide the necessary privacy between the apartments and the communal green space, while also serving as winter food sources for many native bird species.
